One of the most thrilling and unforgettable daytrips you must take when holidaying in Protaras, is visiting the ghost-city of Varosha, which is part of Famagusta. The trip takes just over half an hour and is one of the most visited areas on the island. The story behind the deserted city is quite sad. During the early 70s, Varasha was one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, attracting not only enthusiastic travellers but also celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor and Brigitte Bardot. Nonetheless the famed cosmopolitan town was deserted literally overnight after the Turkish invasion in 1974 and has sadly remained deserted ever since.

Once there you will encounter deserted hotels, homes, restaurants, parked cars and much more. The most renowned are the beaches, characterised as being the most beautiful on the island with golden sands and azure waters!

Ayia Thekla is a small and charming coastal village south of Protaras. It took its name from the ancient church found at the village named, Ayia Thekla (Saint Thekla).
